Clear Out a Working Space

Don’t try to do your closet organization inside of the closet. All that will do is result in you shifting the mess around. Instead, clear out an empty space, perhaps on your bed, as the organizational headquarters for your closet clean up.

Empty Your Closet – Completely

That’s right. Your first major step is to pull out EVERYTHING. Completely empty the closet and try to sort things a bit as you do it. Pile dress clothes in one spot, casual in another, and shoes in another. Don’t spend too much time on organization at this point, but try to keep like items together.

Take a Look at the Carnage

OK. Now your closet is empty. Take a look at how it looks completely free of clothing and other stuff. Do you need shelves installed, maybe a closet organizer? If you do, this is the time to get it done. You may not need them, or already have them. If you do plan now for what clothes will go where. Planning before you begin putting things away will help you to make smart organizational decisions.

Logical Organization

The methodology you will use for putting things away, will be as follows:

•    Everyday items in the middle
•    Lesser used items down low
•    Rarely used items at the top

Begin to put your clothes, shoes and items away according to this plan. As you come across a piece of clothing that can be folded, put it in a drawer. As you come across clothes that are out of style, don’t fit or you just plain don’t like – toss it. Either throw it away or give it away. Keep going and only hang the clothes that need to be hung. Use shelves for shoes and find a logical place for everything.

As you finish up, you should notice a lot less clutter in your closet and a more organized layout. The key now is to keep it that way. When you put laundry away, follow the closet’s new organizational system each time. That way you’ll keep your closet nice and neat well into the future. Organizing your closet wasn’t that bad, was it?
