Start with Bedroom Drawers

The best place to start to organize your bedroom is with the drawers. Chances are you have some clothes and other items in your drawers that need to go. Your goal with the drawer organization is to free up at leas one drawer that will contain nothing at all – for the time being anyway. Toss clothes that don’t fit or that are outdated to the side for now, and try to free up some space. You should be tossing at least one, if not many more, items from each bedroom drawer. Consolidate where you can. For example, socks and undergarments should be placed into one drawer. Whatever you do, make sure that one full drawer is empty by the time you are done.

On to the Closet

Now that you’re warmed up, it’s time to move on to the closet. Empty it out completely and start going through the items you took out. The same rules apply as you used with the drawer clean up. Toss aside stuff you don’t wear or need anymore. If you keep shoes in your closet, purchase a shoe storage system, a small, shallow container to keep them in. They will go under your bed from now on. Hang your dress clothes, but take any clothing that can be folded and put them into the spare drawer you cleaned out. Put items you rarely use on the top shelf and put the rest on shelves for each type of item.

Finishing the Job

Now that you’ve taken care of the drawers and closet, go through any end tables or bookshelves and use the same methodology. Toss stuff you don’t need into a pile or container. Alphabetize books and neatly store everything else on a dedicated shelf.

What About the Pile?

You should have a big pile of stuff to get rid of. Go through these items in another room. Trash the useless stuff and sell or give away to charity, the rest. There’s no sense in holding on to anything that is not important or essential. Learning to let go of items you don’t need will help you develop the habit of staying organized. You could use a bedroom storage bench to store needed items and still have that clean bedroom look.

Now, go back into your bedroom and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Remember how good it feels in the future and don’t let it get disorganized again. If things start to get out of hand, simply repeat this process and you’ll, once again, have an organized bedroom. If you take a few minutes every week to avoid unnecessary clutter, though, you can avoid a big clean up effort in the future. Organize bedroom project now complete.
